This week on Back to Basics, Whitney is showing us How to Chop an Onion. These cuts may even keep you from crying!
Different recipes will call for different types of cuts. Our first cut, sliced, is great for fajitas or any recipe also using sliced peppers. Check out some of our favorites:
Sliced onions are also great for caramelizing (stay tuned…).
Use the dice cut to also create chopped or minced onions. For chopped, use wider cuts; for minced, use smaller cuts.
Try it out:
What you need:
- Knife
- Cutting board
- Onion
Directions:
- Using a large chef’s knife, cut off the top and the root ends of the onion.
- Stand the onion the cut, flat side, and cut it down the middle.
- Use your hands to remove the paper and outermost layer of the onion.
- Place the first onion half on its flat side, then cut slices parallel to the cut root ends. If you need sliced onions rather than chopped onions, you can stop here.
- Keeping the slices together, cut in the opposite direction, following the curve of the onion.
