  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 2 Tbsp. all purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ¼ tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 loaf french bread, cut into 10 slices
  • 8 oz. premium black forest ham; sliced thin
  • 7 oz. La Bonne Vie brie, sliced
  • 1 Tbsp. melted butter
  • ¼ cup gruyere cheese, grated

  1. Melt 2 Tbsp. butter in small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add flour and stir 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk. Add nutmeg and bay leaf.
  3. Increase heat to medium-high and boil until sauce thickens, whisking constantly, about 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Preheat broiler.
  5. Place 5 bread slices on work surface. Top each with ham and a slice of brie. Top with remaining bread.
  6. Heat, large skillet over low heat.
  7. Brush sandwiches with 1 Tbsp. melted butter. Add to skillet and cook until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side.
  8. Transfer to small baking sheet. Spoon sauce, then grate gruyere cheese over sandwich.
  9. Broil until cheese begins to brown, about 2 minutes.
