Benefits of Berries

Bright reds and blues paired perfectly with seasonal sweetness make berries a must-have for many 4th of July tables. But if that’s not enough, berries have even more to offer—they’re packed full of important nutrients!

  • Blueberries
Blueberries contain potassium, vitamin C and fiber. They’re also made of compounds and phytonutrients that may help generate new nerve cells in the brain, promote heart health and lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

  • Strawberries
Strawberries are rich in vitamin C, with one serving accounting for a full day’s recommended amount. They also provide iron, potassium and fiber. Like blueberries, strawberries have phytonutrients that may help you lower some disease risk and improve heart health.

  • Raspberries
Despite their sweet taste, you may be surprised by how low in sugar raspberries really are. Raspberries provide a large amount of fiber for gut health. Like other berries, raspberries contain vitamin C, calcium, potassium and iron as well. Flavonoids and ketones in raspberries are linked to heart health and may even prevent some diseases and cancers.

  • Blackberries
Blackberries are often one of the less popular berry varieties, but they pack a punch in the nutrition department. They’re among the berries with the most antioxidants, potassium and fiber. Blackberries also provide vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium and iron. Combined with flavonoids contained in the dark berries, they may improve health, reduce effects of age-related brain function, reduce disease risk and help fight against some GI tract cancers.

Helpful Storage Tips and Tricks

  • Buy fresh berries in peak season—often early spring through late summer, depending on the variety. When berries are in season, higher availability can lead to more affordable prices in the produce department, and the best tastes and texture.
  • Freezing fresh berries has minimal impact on their nutritional value! You can either buy extra when in season and freeze your own or search the frozen food section to get berries off-season.

  • When storing berries, keep them refrigerated in the original container. Do not wash the berries until you are ready to eat them to maximize their shelf-life.
